Six weeks is the statutory number of weeks annual leave workers in Germany are entitled to.
Germany - Registration

After you have arrived in Germany and have an address you have to register at a 'Rathaus' (Townhall) in the city in which you live, you will need to have your passport with you. You must register within the first week of arriving. When you fill in the registration form, you will be asked your religion and you will later be taxed for this. If you do not want to pay these taxes you should say that you have none. You will receive a form, which your landlord has to fill in, as proof of residence.

EU national residence permit
If you are an EU national, you have to apply for an EU identification card or Gray card (EU Ausweis) at the Aliens Registrations Authority (Ausländeramt). This office is likely to be found in the Rathaus (Townhall). You will need your passport, Ameldung, proof of employment, proof of medical insurance, and 2 pictures. Children over 16 must bring a form from their school.

Income Tax Number
This can be obtained from the Tax Office (Finanzamt) in the city in which you live. Permanent employees must obtain Tax Number called a 'Lohnsteuernummer', from the Finanzamt.
